Same-day shipping (same-day dispatch) means an order is picked, packed and handed to the carrier on the day it is received, provided it arrives before the cut-off time. It should not be confused with same-day delivery, where the parcel reaches the customer on the same day.

What is same-day shipping?
Same-day shipping means dispatching an order on the day it comes in: the goods are picked, packed, labelled and handed to the carrier on the same working day. The condition is always a cut-off time by which the order must have reached the warehouse system. German providers call the service Same-Day-Versand or taggleicher Versand.
Two other terms are often mixed up with it. Same-day delivery means delivery on the day of the order, a courier product for large cities that only few product ranges can offer economically in Germany. Next-day delivery describes delivery on the working day after handover. In practice, same-day shipping is the precondition for a standard parcel to arrive "tomorrow", and within Germany the standard parcel networks usually manage exactly that.
How same-day shipping works in the warehouse
For an order placed at 1:50 pm to be in the carrier's vehicle at 4:30 pm, several building blocks have to work together:
- Real-time integration: Orders flow from your shop or ERP into the WMS within minutes, not by hourly export or CSV upload.
- Stock at the pick face: Fast movers sit in easily reachable zones, and replenishment from reserve storage runs before the last wave.
- Wave control: After the cut-off the WMS builds the final wave and distributes it to the pickers in batches, see order picking.
- Packing stations with label printing: The shipping label is created during pick and pack, not in a separate step.
- Fixed collection: The carrier collects at the same time every day, and the cut-off is calculated backwards from that.
- Capacity buffer: For promotion days and the fourth quarter, packing capacity must be scalable, otherwise the rate collapses exactly when it counts.
The lead time from order receipt to handover is one to four hours in well-organised warehouses. For individual orders that is easy; for 1,500 orders between noon and 2 pm it takes process and system.

Why same-day shipping matters for online sellers
After price, delivery time is the most important decision criterion at checkout. A shop that can credibly offer "order today, delivered tomorrow" reduces abandoned baskets and stands out from shops quoting three to five days. On marketplaces, same-day dispatch is a requirement anyway: Amazon's Seller Fulfilled Prime demands it on working days, and the handling time you set feeds directly into the delivery date Amazon displays.
For sellers outside Germany this is the main argument for holding stock locally. A parcel sent from the UK or overseas to a German customer needs several days and, from outside the EU, customs clearance. The same parcel dispatched from a warehouse in Germany before the cut-off is normally delivered the next working day. Stock held in Germany also reaches neighbouring EU countries quickly, as explained under cross-border fulfillment.
One side effect is underestimated. The shorter the time between order and delivery, the fewer cancellations, duplicate orders and "where is my parcel" enquiries. Same-day shipping therefore also reduces support workload and return rates. If the promise matters to your business, have the same-day rate written into the service level agreement.
