Multichannel fulfillment: one warehouse, one stock for shop, Amazon, eBay and B2B

Multichannel fulfillment serves shop, marketplaces and B2B from one stock. How synchronisation works, what differs per channel in Germany and how to avoid overselling.

Multichannel fulfillment β€” in brief

Multichannel fulfillment is order handling for sellers who sell through several channels (own shop, Amazon, eBay, other marketplaces, B2B) from one shared inventory. All channels are connected to one warehouse management system, which synchronises stock in near real time and applies the right packaging and shipping method for each channel.

What is multichannel fulfillment?

Multichannel fulfillment is e-commerce fulfillment for sellers who sell through more than one channel: their own shop, online marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, Otto or Kaufland, social commerce and often B2B orders to retailers on top. The core principle is one warehouse, one stock, many channels. Every order, wherever it comes from, lands in the same warehouse management system (WMS), is picked from the same shelf and is shipped with the packaging and shipping method defined for that channel.

The opposite is channel-separated fulfillment, where the Amazon stock sits in Amazon's own warehouses, for example, and the shop stock at a provider. That works, but it doubles inventories, inbound deliveries and planning effort.

How multichannel fulfillment works in practice

The technical core is stock synchronisation:

  1. Connecting all channels: shop and marketplaces are linked to the WMS through interfaces, either natively or through an ERP system or middleware acting as a hub.
  2. One master stock: the WMS knows the physical stock. With every order from any channel, the quantity is reserved and the available stock is reported to all other channels within minutes.
  3. Channel rules: for each channel the system holds the packaging (branded carton for the shop, neutral carton for marketplaces), inserts (allowed in the shop, prohibited on many marketplaces), the shipping product and the delivery promise, for example Prime requirements for merchant-fulfilled Amazon orders.
  4. Picking across channels: pickers do not see which channel an order comes from. The WMS sorts orders into waves by cut-off time and shipping method, and an Amazon order with a tight window takes priority. The methods are described under order picking.
  5. Feedback: tracking number and carrier go back to the respective channel, for Amazon and eBay in the prescribed format, so that the order counts as shipped and review deadlines start to run.

Otto and Kaufland are large German marketplaces that many international sellers only discover once they are active in the country. Adding them is far easier when the stock already sits in a German warehouse and the provider's WMS can simply be given one more channel.

!
Common mistake

Supplying each channel with a fixed share of the stock ("60 % shop, 40 % Amazon"). This regularly leads to one channel reporting sold out while goods are lying idle in the other. A shared stock with small safety buffers per channel sells more from the same quantity.

Why multichannel fulfillment matters for online sellers

A second or third channel is the fastest route to more revenue with the same range, and the fastest route to stock chaos if logistics does not grow with it. Two observations from practice: an oversell costs not only the cancellation but almost always a negative review, which lowers visibility on marketplaces. And duplicate inventories in two warehouses tie up 20 to 40 % more capital, depending on the range, than one central stock with a safety stock. Then there is the effort: one inbound delivery instead of two, one stocktake instead of two, one contact person.

Sellers who combine FBA with their own channels can still keep one master stock: the provider holds the inventory, replenishes Amazon in labelled batches through FBA prep and ships shop and eBay orders directly. If several EU countries are served from the same warehouse, the country storefronts are simply further channels; the logistics side of that is covered under cross-border fulfillment, and the carrier choice per destination under multi-carrier shipping.

Practical tip

Start new marketplaces with a small channel buffer: around 2 to 5 units per fast-moving item are not offered to the marketplace. Once synchronisation has run without errors for a few weeks, the buffer can be reduced to zero.

How LogYou handles it

LogYou brings all channels together in one stock on its own platform LogShip. Shopify, Shopware, JTL-Wawi, PlentyONE, Xentral, Amazon (as an official Amazon Selling Partner via the SP-API) and eBay are connected natively, and B2B orders run from the same stock. Packaging and shipping rules are stored per channel. More information is available under e-commerce fulfillment and B2B fulfillment, and an overview of all services under services.

Frequently asked questions about Multichannel fulfillment

What is the difference between multichannel and omnichannel?
Multichannel means that several sales channels are served in parallel. Omnichannel goes one step further and connects the channels seamlessly for the customer, for example ordering online and collecting or returning in a store. In fulfillment the foundation for both is the same: one central stock with a real-time connection to all channels.
How do I avoid overselling across several channels?
By keeping a single master stock in the provider's warehouse management system, from which all channels are served. As soon as an item sells on Amazon, the available stock in the shop and on eBay has to drop within minutes. Small buffers per channel and a safety stock for fast-moving items absorb the remaining latency.
Is Amazon FBA multichannel fulfillment?
Only partly. With FBA the stock sits in an Amazon warehouse and is used for Amazon orders. Amazon can also ship shop orders from it, but in Amazon packaging and without inserts. True multichannel fulfillment serves all channels from one neutral warehouse with the brand's own packaging.
